National Healthcare Decisions Day: A Reminder to Make Your Healthcare Wishes Known
April includes National Healthcare Decisions Day, which serves as a thoughtful reminder to take the time to consider your healthcare wishes before a medical crisis occurs. It encourages adults of all ages to think through what matters most, put their choices in writing, and have open conversations with loved ones about those preferences.
Many people put off these conversations because they feel uncomfortable or believe they are too young or healthy to worry about such things. However, unexpected situations can happen to anyone, and making decisions now helps ensure that your wishes are honored—and that your loved ones are not left to make difficult choices without guidance.
Two key legal documents play an important role in this process: the Healthcare Power of Attorney and the Living Will.
- A Healthcare Power of Attorney allows you to name someone you trust to make medical decisions on your behalf if you are ever unable to speak for yourself.
- A Living Will outlines your preferences regarding end-of-life medical care, such as life-sustaining treatments or comfort-focused care.
Equally important is the conversation that goes along with these documents. Talking with your chosen decision-maker and your family members about what matters most to you—whether it is avoiding prolonged suffering, receiving certain types of treatments, or honoring your personal beliefs—can provide clarity and peace of mind for everyone involved.
If you have not yet created your Healthcare Power of Attorney or Living Will, or if it has been a while since you reviewed them, now is the time.
