Shake Up Your Kitchen Craft

It’s said that trying new things helps keep us young and can even improve brain function. Who hasn’t ever fallen into a rut, making the same meals over and over? If you’ve been making dinner for decades and are looking for some new and fresh ideas, you’ve come to the right place for inspiration! While family traditions and treasured recipes always have a place at the table, sometimes exploring new flavors and even new cultures can be a welcome change. Maybe even an adventure!

Get your farm-to-table groove on
What’s trending in the restaurant industry is easy to re-create at home. Select your favorite vegetables, fruits, and herbs and get growing! Raised beds are a great way to garden. With less of a reach to the ground, they’re comfortable to tend and it can be easier to ward off garden pests. Pots on the patio are also an easy-to-manage way to get fresh produce onto your plate. If you’ve got a budget to work with, an aeroponic or hydroponic system can work indoors or outdoors and grow a large amount of produce in a small space. Even just a few favorite herbs in a sunny window provides the opportunity to enjoy the growing and harvesting process—and bring a fresh burst of flavor to your meals.

Try a meal delivery service.
A meal delivery service is a great way to incorporate some new flavors to your dinner table. Prepared meals delivered right to your door offer the ultimate in convenience. But if you enjoy cooking, meal kits are a great way to try some new recipes and new ingredients. While not necessarily more economical than grocery shopping on your own, meal kits can be a great way to have some culinary adventures without over-investing in specialty ingredients. And you may even find some new favorite dishes to add to your family traditions!

There’s also the wonderful world wide web. These days, you can type in “recipe” and a few key ingredients into the search bar and get a wide variety of options to try in your search results. Maybe you already have a favorite celebrity chef or blogger to follow or maybe you’ll discover a new favorite recipe resource.

Make it social.
Chances are you have some friends in the same boat—looking for new and fresh dinner ideas. Form a dinner club and get exploring! Whether it’s themed potluck dinners once a month or a weekly meet-up that hops around to all the new restaurants in town, a social group is a great way to explore new foods and spend time with friends.

Totally Tribute Music Festival
Looking for a music festival that has all your favorite songs? From 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Virginia Beach will be hosting numerous cover bands to cover all of the classics. Tribute acts will range from Led Zeppelin to Prince. Plenty of food vendors and drink vendors will be available for this two-day music festival as well. The best part of all? This music festival is free and is open to the public. Independence Day Celebration
Yorktown is kicking off Independence Day with enough activities to keep you more active than the waving flag! In the morning, Yorktown will host an 8K Run/Walk that will begin promptly at 8 a.m. Participants of the 8K are encouraged to show off their patriotic spirit in their racing attire. After the 8K, there will be a patriotic fair that will go through Main Street, which will be full of marching bands, floats, and entertainment acts. In the evening there will be a bell-ringing ceremony and concert to keep the American spirit going. Finally, the evening will conclude with a remarkable fire works show over the York River. Attendance is free for most of the activities except for the 8K Run/Walk. For more information, please click here.

4th of July Celebration in Colonial Williamsburg
In the 18th Century, ideas were formulated for American freedom. Come celebrate the birth of America in historic Colonial Williamsburg with fun and activities for the whole family. Activities include the reading of the Declaration of Independence, our dazzling Fife and Drum Corp. who will play music while we celebrate each state with musket fire and cannons, and an incredible ending of a fun day of events with beautiful fireworks set to Patriotic and Colonial tunes. Anika Nonie Rose starts that Firework celebration on the Palace Green and 9:00 pm and the fireworks display begins at 9:20 pm. Come join in the fun!

4th of July Stars in the Sky
Are you looking for something fun to do for July 4th? At the Victory Landing Park, the City of Newport News is creating an Independence Day bash that will ignite both your patriotism and fun! This will be a family friendly event and will have something for all age groups. For children, there will be free face painting and free bouncy houses. Adults will be able to picnic at the park while listening to the Tomcats Dixieland Band. At 9:00 pm, the USAF Heritage of America Band, consisting of active-duty musicians, will perform in coordination with a stunning firework show. Attendance for this event is free. Sounds of Summer - The Deloreans
Historic Yorktown is continuing its summer concert series, and they are beginning July's lineup with The Deloreans, one of the biggest bands in the area. The Deloreans are best known for their 80s tribute songs, although they are also well-known for mastering other eras of music such as the 60's and 70's. The concert will be right at the waterfront of Historic Yorktown and will be fully equipped with a dance floor, corn hole tournament, and a rotating cast of food truck vendors. Alcohol is also allowed at the venue, so make sure to bring your own beer! Best of all, attendance for the concert is free. For more information, please click here.

Open Air Yoga

Hot Air Balloon Festival
Enjoy the opportunity of a lifetime and ride a hot air balloon over the waters of Virginia Beach. This will be a family friendly affair and will include food vendors, local artisans, and live music. This event is meant to get the local population excited about the art of hot air balloons, as well as give people the opportunity to see their hometown from a unique perspective...up in the air! Fiber Crafts and Friends
Playing with yarn can be quite fun...but it can also get quite lonesome. Fortunately, the Northampton Branch Library is hosting a social event for all knitters, cross-stitchers, and quilters in the Hampton Roads area. Here, you can meet people with similar interests while working on your favorite passion-projects. This event is also perfect for sharing advice on complex sewing techniques and knitting hacks. Beatlemania Dinner and a Show
Are you feeling symptoms of the British fever? It seems the only cure is to take a dose of Beatlemania. Puff Pastry Star Cookies

Ingredients:

All-purpose flour, for work surface
2 sheets (1 17.3-ounce package) puff pastry, thawed
1 large egg, beaten
1/4 c. jam, jelly, or fruit preserves
Sanding sugar, for sprinkling

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. On a lightly floured work surface, roll each sheet of puff pastry into a 10- by 12-inch rectangle. Using a 3 1/2-inch star-shaped cookie cutter, cut out 12 stars from each sheet. Transfer to prepared baking sheets.
Brush the points of half the stars with egg; carefully spoon jam (about 1 teaspoon) onto the center of each star. Using a 1 3/4-inch star-shaped cookie cutter, cut out smaller star shapes from the centers of the remaining 12 larger stars. Place stars with the holes over the jam, doing your best to line up the points. Press edges gently to seal. Brush the tops with egg and sprinkle with sugar.
Bake, rotating halfway through, until golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Cool slightly before serving. Cookies can be made 2 days ahead. Store, tightly covered, at room temperature.
